Energy Star System (The Green Star)
*Energy Star System has the U.S Green Star
-Indicate device meets conserving standards.
-Devices: Computers, monitors, printers, copies and faxes
*Goals of energy Star (a.k.a Green) standards.
-Reduce overall electricity consumption
-Protect and preserve natural resources
*How computer components meet standards.
Power Management Methods and Features
*Methods to meet energy star standards:
-Some features control by BIO others by Windows
-Advanced Power Management (APM) specification
-AT attachment (ATA) for various drives
-Display Power Management Signaling (DPMS)
Energy Star Monitors
*Display Power Management (DPMS) Take note!!!!!
=The use of cooling fan is to cool down the CPU so it will not switch off by itself.
=CPU need cooling fan.
=Graphic card need cooling fan.
Replacing power supply
*The power supply Is a field replaceable unit. (FRU)
*Criteria for replacement power supply to meet
-uses the correct form factor
*Before replacing power supply, test the new devices
Motherboards
*It is the main printed circuit board
*It contains the electrical pathways that are found in the computer.
*Also known as the system board, the backplane or the main board.
*The largest and most important circuit board.
-It contains the CPU, expansions slots, other devices.
*All devices communicate with CPU on the motherboard.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
*Known as the brain pf the computer. Also referred to as the processor.
*Two major CPU architectures related to instruction sets:
*Over clocking is a technique used to make a processor work at a faster speed than its original specification.
How Processor Works
*Three basic components
-Input/output (I/O) unit.
-Control unit
-One or more arithmetic logic units (ALUs)
*Registers: high-speed memory used by ALU
*Two types of buses:
-External (front-side)
-Internal (back-side)
The Intel Processor
*Early model numbers: 8088,8086,80286
*New three-digit processor numbers is different from the early ones...
